Repent, O United States of America !
By Nancy Shupp
Repent, O United States of America . Long years I have sent my messengers to warn you to turn from your wicked ways, to turn to me and live. But you have not listened, you have not heard, you have not obeyed.
How long will the blood of the slaughtered innocents cry out to me and my judgement tarry? How long will my mercy hold back the consequences of your sins?
Do you think that I don’t see your wickedness? Do you really believe that I wink at your evil deeds? Do you continue to scoff at my word, which says that sin will destroy a nation?
For the sake of a righteous remnant, I have held back my fury. For the sake of those who continue to cry to me for mercy and for the salvation of this once-great nation, I have restrained my wrath.
The earth has shaken and yet you haven’t wakened out of your slumber. Floods are raging, but only your man-made structures and not your sins have been washed away. Fire has destroyed your material goods, but not your greed and self-absorption. Whirlwinds have leveled your cities, yet you will not bow your knee to me.
Even in the midst of your distress and despair, you will not turn to me. Even when stripped of all you hold dear, you curse me instead of running to my loving arms. My love for you means nothing. You are not even aware of my broken heart. You are oblivious to the yearning I have to make you my own.
No more! No more! Repent. Turn from your wicked ways and seek me while I may be found. Humble yourselves before me. If you stand tall in your pride and arrogance, you will surely fall.
Mourn, for the day of trouble is at hand. Weep, for the time of wrath is here. Howl, for the season of mercy is ending.
Repent, O United States of America !
